Lesson 2-The Philosophes (Montesquieu and Rousseau)
Learning Objectives: From a reading of Montesquieu, the nature of law will be understood, as well as the value of a system of checks and balances between the three branches of government.

Three basic tenents of the Philosophes:
Natural law is an ethical belief or system of beliefs supposed to be inherent in human nature and discoverable by reason rather than revelation.
Divide class into three groups:
Find as many of the three basic tenets as they can in each of these documents on government, list on the board.
